Belarus. Soil moisture loss because of a precipitation shortage
Due to scarce precipitation, the soil is losing moisture and the area with rather dry topsoil is expanding. The 0-10 cm topsoil has low moisture content in many southern areas and in the northwest. This worsens conditions for tillage, seed germination and emergence of spring crops. The soil at a 10-cm depth is moderately moist.
Planting of spring grains is drawing to an end; farmers in the south have started to sow corn. Because of a cold-spell, the soil temperature is below optimum for planting heat-loving crops. Seed germination is underway in the fields planted to spring grains. In the south, the latter have even emerged where sown in March or early April, reports UkrAgroConsult.
