Russia planted 40% of forecasted acreage under winter crops

Weather conditions. On most days between September 1-5, the Northwestern, Central and Volga federal districts were exposed to abnormally cold weather with rain of various intensities. In the Southern and North Caucasian federal districts, it was mostly cooler than usual. The Siberian federal district enjoyed warmer-than-usual weather in August.

Moisture supply. Harvest conditions in the Northwestern, Central and Volga federal districts were unfavorable and poor during 9-12 days because of rains (monthly precipitation rates totaled 50 to 140 mm), high air humidity, and too wet soil and plant stand of grain crops. Spiked cereals lodged in part of the fields due to heavy downpours and strong winds. The Southern and North Caucasian federal districts received little precipitation, therefore they enjoyed good weather conditions for completing harvest of spiked cereals and starting harvest of late crops. The Siberian federal district received less than 50% of normal monthly precipitation rates in August, while monthly rainfall in other areas ranged from 70-80% to at least 100-130% of normal. The ripening conditions for early spring grains were good and fair.
