Romania is on the way to the third largest grain crop

Attractive export prices and the decrease in rapeseed planting area favored a 3% rise in wheat area in Romania in 2019/20 MY. Wheat crop is forecasted at -3% y/y as soil drought in autumn and early spring had negative effect on average wheat yield – though, the expected volume will be the third largest for the country, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Export potential is forecasted to decrease assuming the lower crop, but corresponds 5-year average for Romania. Next season Romanian exporters will see higher competition from Russia, Ukraine and France due to higher wheat production in these countries.

In 2019/20 MY barley and corn seeded area is expected to be 10% and 6% higher than last year due to attractive prices and high export demand.

Thus, in 2019/20 MY Romanian farmers preferred to increase seeded area of grains at the expense of rapeseed. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, which affected the average yield of winter grains, production is estimated as the third largest for the country.

Current grain export estimate is also seen as the third maximum, but may endure considerable revisions depending on the weather conditions for corn development during the summer period.
