Despite a pea crop decline this year, Ukraine started the 2019/20 season with active exports of the commodity. 201.2 KMT of peas were exported from the country in the first three months of the season, or 22% more than in the same period in MY 2018/19, but 35% less than in the record season of 2017/18, reports UkrAgroConsult.
The European Union remains the top importer of Ukrainian peas this season. Noteworthy is that pea shipments to EU countries continue to increase rapidly.
The European Union expand its share in Ukrainian pea exports to a record 64%, having outstripped previous leaders such as India, Turkey and Pakistan. Apart from the EU, Thailand and Nepal also boosted pea purchases from Ukraine.
A drop is observed in exports to the following countries: Turkey (-48% year-on-year) and Pakistan (-77%).
Although pea exports from Ukraine showed a rapid pace in the first quarter of the season, UkrAgroConsult forecasts 2019/20 total to drop to a four-year low.
According to our estimates, Russia has harvested as much peas as last year. At the same time, the pace of Russian pea exports is slower than in 2018. Unlike supplies from Ukraine, Russian pea exports to European Union countries decreased. Russian exporters offset the decline in supplies to the EU by increasing pea shipments to the Indian market.
In view of shrinking pulse areas in the Black Sea region, we estimate that export pea offers from Ukraine and Russia will fall by 25% in MY 2019/20 against the previous season, or to their lowest in four seasons.
