Kazakhstan. Barley exports continue at a record pace

Consulting Agency

Kazakhstan exported over 1.08 MMT of barley in September-March 2017/18 that is 55% more than in the whole of MY 2016/17. It should be stressed that only MY 1992/1993 saw higher barley exports (some 1.9 MMT), reports UkrAgroConsult.

Barley exports from Kazakhstan in March 2018 were a bit lower than in the previous month. They totaled 157.9 KMT, i.e. 8% less than in February 2018 (170.9 KMT) but three times as much as in March 2017 (47.9 KMT).

96% of Kazakh export barley went to Iran. Traditionally, the top importers still include Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and the EU, which accounted for a combined export share of 3.9%.

Taking into account substantially increased barley purchases by the main importer, i.e. Iran, UkrAgroConsult does not rule out that exports may close this season up even at 1.5 MMT or higher, provided Kazakh exporters succeed in withstanding competition from Russia.

It is worth noting that Russia doubled barley shipments to Iran in July-February 2017/18: it supplied some 1.14 MMT to that country against 0.5 MMT in the whole of last season.

Noteworthy, UkrAgroConsult expect Kazakh wheat shipments in 2017/18 season to be the record high in four last seasons.

In September-March 2017/18 wheat exports amounted 3.3 MMT that is about 40% more compared to last season.

As a reminder, farmers in the north of Kazakhstan cannot start spring planting because of abundant rainfall. This leads to some delay in its progress compared to last year.

As of May 12, 582.5 Th ha (4.1 % of the plan) had already been seeded to spring cereals that is less 6.2% year-on-year. 78.8 Th ha of corn for grain (50.9%) had been sown, 36% more than in 2017. 37.8 Th ha of rice (39.5%) also had been sown, compare to 48.9 Th ha (52.9%) in 2017.
