Russia. Snow cover and low air temperatures persist in most of the country

Consulting Agency

On November 11-15, the average daily air temperature in the Central, Volga, Southern and North Caucasian federal districts, as well as in the eastern half of the Northwest district was mainly 3-6°C below normal. In most areas, the lowest air temperature hit -15…-10°C, with -4…-1°C in the daytime. The fields were actually free of snow at the time, and soil temperature at the tillering node depth of winter cereals (3 cm) fell to -7…-5°C around November 15 (locally to -13…-10°C). Winter grain crops stopped growing, reports UkrAgroConsult.

During November 11-20, most federal districts received 15 to 25 mm of precipitation in the form of rain, sleet and snow. Actually no precipitation occurred in the Central Black-Earth and Middle-Volga regions. Towards November 20, the north of European Russia was covered with 1-5 cm of snow, as well as single areas in the Central district and northern parts of Krasnodar, Stavropol regions and Kalmykia. In Perm region and the Republic of Komi, snow cover height varied from 10 to 25 cm and higher.

In northern areas, the soil was mostly frozen to a depth of 2-5 cm, being thawed in part of the fields. Where no snow had fallen, the soil was frozen to a depth of 20-35 cm (locally to 40-50 cm). The agrometeorological conditions were mostly fair for winter crops to begin dormancy. No dangerously low air temperatures were reported.
