GRAIN. Ukrainian farmers had sown 2268 Th ha of early spring cereals and pulses by May 22 (96% of their projected area) against 2314 Th ha by May 22, 2018. The gap in sowing from last year is minimum, reports UkrAgroConsult.
The planted area includes 166 Th ha (95%) of spring wheat against 172 Th ha in 2017 and 1498 Th ha (96%) of spring barley against 1562 Th ha last year. The Ag Ministry has adjusted its barley planting forecast downwards by 34 Th ha, with a consequent increase in the ratio between this crop’s planted and projected areas.
Oat plantings already total 189 Th ha (92%) compared to 198 Th ha a year ago. The area seeded to peas currently equals 416 Th ha (99%) against 382 Th ha at the same time a year ago.
Corn planting is drawing to an end with its progress being 2% ahead of last year. 4373 Th ha had been seeded to corn for grain by the reporting date (95% of the plan) against 4286 Th ha by May 22, 2017.
OILCROPS. The Ag Ministry of Ukraine reports 5425.3 Th ha of sunflower planted by May 21, 2018 that is 98% of the projected 5559.5 Th ha (the official figure was increased by 4 Th ha). Sunflower planting is almost 104% the progress of last year: 5223 Th ha was seeded to this crop a year ago.
The soybean planted area equaled 1568.5 Th ha as of May 21 that is 81% of the projected 1929 Th ha (the official figure was increased by 0.1 Th ha). Soybean planting is 89.5% the progress of last year compared to 88.3% a week ago. 1753 Th ha was seeded to soybeans by this time last year. E
