Bulgaria. Below normal air temperatures kept winter crops dormant
Weather conditions. Following a brief temperature increase in early January, weather conditions changed after January 5: air temperatures were below normal that kept winter crops dormant, reports UkrAgroConsult.
Moisture supply. Minor snowfall did not change the level of topsoil moisture substantially. Soil moisture supply in the 0-50 cm and 0-100 cm layers for winter wheat is unusually scarce this season: locally below 65%.
Condition of winter crops. Air temperatures down at -9°C in snow-free conditions only posed a threat to late-sown winter crops, which stopped growing in the fall in the stages of emergence and early leaf formation.
