Ukraine. Weather favoring early grains
This past week the Ag Ministry of Ukraine said that farmers were going to sow 4625 Th ha to corn in 2019, or 44 Th ha more than last year. However, there are certain concerns about implementation of this plan.
As UkrAgroConsult noted before, this year’s early spring will allow Ukrainian growers to begin planting early spring crops a month ahead of last year. So, as of March 22, planting of early spring grains was already underway almost all over the country and even 35% complete (794 Th ha of 2284 Th ha). The pace of this work is the fastest in five years.
In particular, farmers had already sown 571 Th ha of spring barley (36% complete), whereas they had not yet even started sowing by this point last year. According to UkrAgroConsult’s estimates, the planted area of spring barley may increase this year.
