Grains yield and quality indicators should improve with crop progress — Elizaveta Malyshko

In the southern part of Ukraine, which was most affected by the dry spring conditions, the first yields are expected to be much worse from last year's. This was informed by Elizaveta Malyshko, the grain market expert at UkrAgroConsult.

"With the protein high enough, the grain will yet be hollow, with low natural weight," states Elizaveta Malyshko.

However, she says, quantitative and qualitative indicators will improve with the start of harvesting in most regions.

According to the expert, this year the share of milling wheat in the bulk yield will exceed 50%.

"May rains have improved the condition of wheat throughout Ukraine, except the far south. And the hot weather in June, accompanied by rains, favourably affects both the quality and quantity of grain," comments Elizaveta Malyshko.

She stresses that, according to forecasting models, such weather conditions will remain in the near future, contributing to the ripening of early spring grains, as well as corn and sunflower.

Winter barley in Odesa region is yielding so far less than 1 t/ha. Winter wheat yield is rather poor as well. Rapeseed harvesting will start in a fortnight.

A decrease was observed in the Black Sea wheat export quotations for the new harvest on the FOB basis deepwater ports for July shipment.

The Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine is estimating the grain harvest 2020 at over 68 mln t vs. the previously announced forecast of 65-68 mln t.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of the Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine and grain market participants will be signed on July 1 to ensure the projected grain export volume in the 2020/21 season.
