Record sweet cherry crop possible in Ukraine
The start of fruit-bearing of new sweet cherry orchards, planted in 2012-2018, gives grounds for experts to predict a record sweet cherry crop in Ukraine.
As EastFruit reports, this season has good prospects for Ukrainian producers of sweet cherry.
More export opportunities appear as most of the sweet cherry crop in Europe now is processed, rather than marketed. This is driven by the loss of crop quality due to adverse weather conditions. In addition, a lack of sweet cherry supply in the European market keeps prices high enough. Experts say that the delay in the start of sweet cherry harvest in Ukraine will play into the hands of Ukrainian farmers as it will allow to start the exports when Uzbekistan nearly leaves the market and sweet cherry deliveries from Turkey begin to decline.
In 2019, the sweet cherry export from Ukraine will exceed 5,000 tonnes for the first time and will hit a record for the years of Ukraine’s independence, the experts predict.
